New study finds link between poor simulation of Southern Ocean cloud cover and doubling of the ITCZ in global climate models

Most global climate models inaccurately predict too much rainfall in the tropics. New research by UW scientists has found that the primary culprit is the poor simulation of Southern Ocean clouds in GCMs. PCC graduate student Yen-Ting Hwang (Atmos) and PCC faculty member Dargan Frierson (Atmos) are co-authors of the study, which was published this week in PNAS.

An article from UW Today on their work can be found here, and the link to the study in PNAS here.
